Chapter 12

Carli

I click confirm on my order for white baby furniture. Not for my own child, of course, but for Jace and Beth’s future baby. Swinging my legs to and fro, I sit on the step of a ladder that’s leaning against a wall and I look around the nursery, pushing away the desire to do some shopping for myself. It wouldn’t hurt to look at some tiny baby clothes, would it? Or cute shoes and hats! I give in finally when I think of how adorable they would look, and I open my laptop balanced on my knees.

Jace still hasn’t shown up at the beach house. It’s been weeks since I saw him last, and I have to admit that I miss his presence here. The house feels more vacant, more unfinished, and less peaceful when I’m alone. I tell myself it’s not that bad because if Jace were here, I would either cry or start hitting him for hurting me. I thought we shared the same feelings, even though they were only a little, just beginning to grow. And it never stops hurting when I recall the moment he said I meant nothing to him.

We’ve been emailing, though. Just once or twice, talking about nothing but the designs for the house and how my progress is going. This morning, I told him about the finalized plans for the nursery. He said he liked them and so did Beth, which is why I’m stepping on to the next stage. The much more fun one. I’m putting Mr. Hart at the back of my mind and concentrating on only this house and my little poppy seed growing in me.

This morning was my second check-up. Thankfully, the doctors gave me an all clear on both our health, a list of things I should avoid and take precautions with. I left the clinic with a grin on my face and happy tears on my cheeks. When I called mom and told her, she screamed on the other end of the phone, showing excitement for the first time since I told her about my pregnancy. We chatted for about an hour, and I hung up only after I heard dad in the background demanding I speak to him. His unanswered calls are growing on my call logs. I’ll let them pile up until I’m ready to face the truth of my future.

I turn to my side, noting the afternoon sun is shining bright on the rolling blue waves. The seagulls caw loudly, and the neighborhood fishermen shout on the shore followed by their belly laughter. Golden streams of light filter into the room, making me warm all over. I sigh with contentment. I didn't puke today, didn't cry, didn't overthink. I finished my to-do list at the right time, and I’m not behind on work. My day is going ama—

I hear a crash downstairs, and a tumble of feet up the stairs. I sit up straight and alert. Slowly sliding off the ladder with a tight grip on my laptop, I hold it up in the air, ready to hit anyone who comes in.
